You’ve probably noticed the neighborhood kid riding to school on it – sort of like a Segway, but without a handle. It’s called the mini Segway, also called as Hoverboard Segway or Two Wheel Self Balancing Scooter. It’s a whole lot of fun and has become very popular lately.
Mini Segways are today a part of popular culture. There are a lot of celebrities and YouTube stars who have been seen in public with these gadgets. They are also among the hottest selling gift ideas for Christmas, which is just weeks away.
There’s no official name for this gadget. The self balancing scooter is made by several different brands, but there is much to differentiate between the devices.
So, what’s in the box? You get the mini Segway itself, a charger and a user’s manual. Nothing complicated – you can start using it after a quick 2 hour charging. The self balancing electric scooter looks nice, has a solid build quality and weighs around 25 pounds. It is hefty enough not to break down after taking a tumble or two, and light enough to be carried on your shoulder.
The maximum speed that you can reach with these self balancing electric scooters is 7 to 12 mph. There are some brands that promise a top speed of 15 mph, which is very high. The mini Segway gives you a small beeping signal the moment you hit top speed on it, as a warning. The average jogging speed for most people is 4 to 6 mph, so, the gadget goes at that speed and a little more, if you really push it.
The electric self balancing scooter supports a maximum weight of 220 pounds. There really aren’t a lot of people who weigh more than 220 pounds, so this shouldn’t be a problem. And what about the charging? The charging takes 1 to 2 hours, which is pretty fast.
It’s really very easy to ride the mini Segway. Even a child could get the hang of it in no time at all. Basically, all you need to do is to hit the power button, step on the black pads and activate the motor. That gets the device moving. Just stay relaxed and place your feet at the opposite ends of the board as far apart as possible, for maximum control.
Just move back and forth and forward and backward, you will get a good idea of how to ride the mini Segway and will be on your way to wherever it is that you want to go. Typically, it takes no more than 30 minutes of practice before you are comfortable with the mini Segway. Kids actually learn riding it faster than adults because they can adapt to new things much faster.
There are some things that would require a bit of practice, such as riding uphill and downhill, but for the most part, it’s as easy as it gets. Riding a self balancing scooter is very intuitive – it’s as if the gadget knows what you are thinking and where you want to go – it is able to judge that from your body movement and takes you in the desired direction. It is easily one of the smartest gadgets out there in the marketplace.
Well, you can ride the mini Segway for 60-90 minutes quite comfortably. After that, you may feel a burning sensation in the feet as standing in that position and staying alert for so long can be highly demanding. It takes a lot out of you, especially when you are just getting used to the self balancing scooter. Once you adapt yourself physically and mentally to the device, you will be able to ride it for a lot longer.
Now, this is the best part. Mini Segways cost anywhere from hundreds to a thousand, which is a very reasonable price for them. Compare this to the original Segways – they cost an arm and a leg, which is absurd. Mini Segways are a lot of fun to ride, affordable and easy to learn.
